Introduction
Welcome to another edition of Productivity Wednesday.
Being human means being accountable to others and that means, at the end of the day, one’s leadership skills. People respect those who took charge, made a difference, and started new projects — and are willing to stand in front of a crowd and say it was worth it! Being a leader doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. It means you’re always responsible for what you say, how you act, and what direction you set for those around you.
Certainly, leaders rely on their individual responsibility to monitor, develop and improve their performance. The same is true of being a leader at work. Being accountable means being responsible for the results of our own actions. There are times when we need to be willing to take responsibility for our failures as well as our successes and other people’s mistakes. That doesn’t mean taking personal credit for others’ successes and blaming them for failures.
Accountability is a key component of leadership development because leaders rely on their individual responsibility to monitor, develop and improve their performance. However, leaders need to be accountable for their own performance as well as other people’s performance and results. That doesn’t mean taking personal credit for others’ successes and blaming them for failures. Rather, it means accepting personal ownership of mistakes or problems within your teams or organization and working hard to correct them before they become larger problems that affect team members or broader organizational goals.
How to Develop Personal Leadership
Developing personal leadership means being able to walk the talk and take action — both internally and externally — when it comes to making decisions that align with your values. Here are a few ways you can develop this skill:
- The first step toward developing your personal leadership potential is knowing yourself well enough to know what you are capable of achieving when you put your mind to it. The next step is understanding your motivation for wanting to lead others—what motivates you? What will keep you going when times get tough? How do you feel when things go wrong? These are all questions that need answering if you are going to become a great leader.
- Show up – When you show up for work, you lead by example. The same principle applies when it comes to leading yourself by showing up for daily conversations with yourself as well as others around you. This doesn’t mean you have to be perfect all the time; rather, it means being honest about your actions and intentions at all times, so that others can see for themselves what kind of person you are and how others should respond accordingly.
- Lastly, Leaders are made, not born. If you want to develop as a leader, you must first become aware of your own leadership strengths and weaknesses. You need to understand what your personal leadership style is and how you can use it most effectively. Then you must seek out situations where you can use these skills in order to build your own personal leadership profile.
