Hi there,

Dave Williamson once said, “any move toward standardization is a move in the right direction”. Welcome to another Productivity Wednesday. If you have been following our weekly articles, which I believe you have, you can easily refer to me as the “Standards Chick” lol! Well, I hope that you have been enlightened so far on the various standardization bodies we have discussed so far.

Today, we will be discussing another standardization body, The International Electrotechnical Commission. This might look or sound strange, but it is a standard that is marked on a lot of items around us. Have you bought a home appliance and looked at the carton? If you haven’t, then you got yourself an assignment. The cartons of most home appliances come with is stamp marked as “IEC” and further marked with ‘QC Passed”.

International Electrotechnical Commission also known as IEC is an international standards organization that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic, and related technologies collectively referred to as “Electrotechnology”.  IEC standards cover a vast range of technologies from power generation, transmission and distribution to home appliances and office equipment, semiconductors, fiber optics, batteries, solar energy, nanotechnology, and marine energy as well as many others. The IEC also manages four global conformity assessment systems that certify whether equipment, system or components conform to its international standards.

IEC just as ISO has different certifications which the body issues depending on the electrotechnology space you operate in. Below are some of the standards:

  1. IEC 60028 International standard of resistance for copper
  2. IEC 60034 Rotating electrical machines
  3. IEC 60038 Standard Voltages
  4. IEC 60041 Field acceptance tests to determine the hydraulic performance of hydraulic turbines, storage pumps and pump-turbines
  5. IEC 60044 Instrument transformers
  6. IEC 60045 Steam turbines
  7. IEC 60060 High Voltage test techniques
  8. IEC 60064 Tungsten filament lamps for domestic and similar general lighting purposes
  9. IEC 60065 Audio, video, and similar apparatus – safety requirements
  10. IEC 60085 Electrical insulation – Thermal evaluation and designation.

A lot is happening around us daily, including startups; so, if you are looking at starting an electrotechnology company or currently work for one, this standardization body gives your customers all the assurances that they need to patronize you. 21Search can provide you with all the necessary assistance to have you certified. Until I come your way again, stay safe, work smart and not just hard.
